Guizhou University, or Guizhou University for short, was founded in Guiyang City, capital of Guizhou Province, in 1902. It is a world-class national "double-class" discipline-building university. The Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guizhou Province have cooperated to build universities, and the national "211 Project" key construction universities. Guizhou Province is a key comprehensive university, and has been selected as an excellent legal personnel education and training plan. Guizhou University went through the period of Guizhou University Hall, Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou Agricultural and Industrial College and National Guizhou University, and was named Guizhou University in October 1950. In August 1997, it merged with Guizhou Agricultural College and other universities. In August 2004, it merged with Guizhou University of Technology. In December 2012, the Ministry of Education and Guizhou Provincial People's Government jointly built colleges and universities. April 2016 was listed as the national "one province, one school" key support for the construction of universities. In November 2017, he was awarded the title of the first National Civilized Campus.
As of March 2018, the school covers an area of 33,833.29 mu; it has 40 colleges; there are 31,417 full-time undergraduates and 8716 full-time postgraduates; there are 3958 faculty members, including 2842 full-time teachers, 490 professors, 1121 associate professors, 902 doctorates and 876 master's degrees; there are more than 368,000 paper documents in the library and 2.1 million Chinese and foreign electronic books in the library. 。

贵州大学历经贵州大学堂、省立贵州大学、国立贵州农工学院、国立贵州大学等时期，1950年10月定名为贵州大学。1997年8月，与贵州农学院等院校合并。2004年8月，与贵州工业大学合并。2012年12月成为教育部与贵州省人民政府共建高校 。2016年4月被列为国家“一省一校”重点支持建设大学。 2017年11月荣获第一届全国文明校园称号。
截至2018年3月，学校占地面积33833.29亩；下设40个学院；在校全日制本科生31417人，全日制研究生8716人；有教职工3958人，其中，专任教师2842人，教授490人、副教授1121人，具有博士学位902人、硕士学位876人；图书馆馆藏纸质文献368万余册，中外文电子图书210万余万册。
