Guizhou University was founded in 1902. It was named Guizhou University in October 1950 after the period of Guizhou University Hall, Provincial Guizhou University, National Guizhou Agricultural and Industrial College and National Guizhou University. In November 1951, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of Guizhou University. In August 1997, it merged with Guizhou Agricultural College and other universities. In August 2004, it merged with Guizhou University of Technology. In December 2004, the Ministry of Education and the Guizhou Provincial People's Government jointly built colleges and universities. In September 2005, it became the National "211 Project" University. In September 2012, it was listed as one of the 14 universities in the National "Comprehensive Strength Promotion Project of Colleges and Universities in the Midwest". In April 2016, it was listed as a national key construction University of "one province, one school" in the central and Western regions. In September 2017, it became the first-class discipline construction university in the world. In November 2017, the school won the first "National Civilized Campus". In February 2018, the school became a "joint-construction" University between Ministry of Education and Guizhou Provincial People's Government. In December 2018, the school was selected as the "National Demonstration College of Party Construction" training and founding unit. In January 2019, the school was selected as the pilot unit of the Ministry of Education's comprehensive reform of "three-round education".
The school covers an area of 4646 mu. The library now has more than 3.78 million volumes of paper documents and 4.13 million volumes of Chinese and foreign electronic books. The school has a wide range of disciplines, including literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, education and art. There are 40 colleges with 33 064 full-time undergraduates, 18 880 full-time undergraduates and 11 925 postgraduates. At present, there are 3940 in-service faculty members, including 2523 full-time teachers, 497 professors, 1096 associate professors, 1006 doctorates and 1284 master's degrees.
The school currently has 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 specially appointed professors of the Yangtze River Scholars Award Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 young scholar of the Yangtze River Scholars Award Program of the Ministry of Education, 5 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand People Program", 4 leading talents of the national young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation, 2 national cultural experts and 4 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national level. Six candidates for the "Millions of Talents Project" in the new century, 24 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, 12 members of the "Excellent Science and Technology Talents in the New Century" of the Ministry of Education, 11 core experts of Guizhou Province and 47 experts of Guizhou Provincial Administration.
